Testicular Cancer is the leading cancer in men ages 15-44

Every hour a male is diagnosed with testicular cancer, and every day a life is lost. This cancer forms in the testicles and almost always start in the germ cells. It is a highly treatable and often curable form of cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The five-year survival rate for men diagnosed with testicular cancer is about 95 percent, but EARLY detection is KEY!

Many doctors recommend men between the ages of 15 and 55 perform monthly testicular self-exams, particularly after a warm shower. Below is a diagram on how to perform a self-exam.

Signs to look out for

• Having an area of hardness or a small lump around the testicle
• Having an enlarged testicle
• Pain or discomfort in the scrotum or testicle
• A dull ache or sense of pressure in the lower abdomen or back
• A feeling of heaviness or fullness in the scrotum
• Enlargement or tenderness of the breasts due to elevated hormone levels

*If any of these signs or symptoms are present, see your doctor for further testing immediately.

Who’s at risk

• A family history of testicular cancer
• The race of the individual, as testicular cancer is more common for white men
• An HIV diagnosis
• Cryptorchidism (having one or both of the testes fail to descend into the scrotum)
